Recipe: Classic Steak Mince Cottage Pie
Ingredients (serves four to six)
Five hundred grams steak mince
One tablespoon olive oil
One onion, finely chopped
Two carrots, diced
Two cloves garlic, crushed
One tablespoon tomato purée
Two hundred millilitres beef stock
One teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Eight hundred grams potatoes, peeled and chopped
Fifty grams butter
One hundred millilitres milk
Salt and black pepper
Method
Heat the olive oil in a large pan and cook the onion, carrots, and garlic for five minutes until softened. Add the steak mince and brown well, breaking it up with a spoon. Stir in the tomato purée, stock, and Worcestershire sauce. Season and simmer for twenty minutes until thickened.
Meanwhile, boil the potatoes until tender, then mash with butter and milk until smooth. Season to taste.
Spoon the mince mixture into a baking dish, top with the mash, and rough up the surface with a fork. Bake at one hundred and ninety degrees for twenty-five minutes until golden and bubbling.
Serve hot with peas or greens — hearty, simple, and full of rich beef flavour.
